Why Orangeries are the new to Conservatories?
If you need an additional living space in your home, then designing an orangery or conservatory is the answer! Although used interchangeably at times, the decision to outgrow your home can be a bit simpler, but choosing between an orangery and a conservatory can be a daunting task! Adding any type of extension to your home is a major decision and investment. It is worth taking the time to choose carefully which type best suits your needs, budget and property.
Dating back to the 15th and 18th centuries, Orangeries were mainly today’s conservatories used to cultivate plants like oranges and lemons. Today, an Orangery can be turned into any room creating a really deluxe extension which not only improves the aesthetic appeal of your home but also adds more value!
In its typical form, a conservatory consists of fully glazed elevations (walls) and a translucent roof glazed with either polycarbonate or double glazed glass units. Many conservatories are built on a brick dwarf wall and many are built with full height brick walls to one or more elevations.
The modern Orangery, being a more formal type of conservatory, is a strong structure built with columns and pilasters which has a permanent presence. It tends to resemble a structure that is half conservatory and half brick built extension. Though there is less glass used in an Orangery, it still manages to create a striking visual impact which is much more architecturally pleasing than a conservatory.
An orangery will generally incorporate a flat roof at the perimeter with one or more inset roof lanterns. This makes for an interesting ceiling, as there will be substantial daylight in which to work and evening dining can be enjoyed under a starlit sky. The roof can also be enhanced with contemporary recessed-downlighters with dimmer switches. And since Orangeries use a lot more bricks and timber with less glass you get a building with a much greater sense of privacy from the overlooking pedestrians or neighbours!
Elegance and style come as a standard with Orangeries. An Orangery also allows you to expand the useable living space available in your home, whilst giving it a contemporary and luxurious feel. Though Orangeries are a bit more expensive owing to the construction materials used, the money invested in designing an orangery is just worth it!
