Orangeries From garden feature to alternative extension

Orangeries – From garden feature to alternative extension

Orangery History
Orangeries were fashionable in the 18th and 19th century, as an alternative to a glass house. They were used as living rooms, dining rooms and rooms to keep plants and trees in. The orangery was seen as a symbol of prestige and wealth and was once used as a garden feature. It was a room built separate from the house at the end of a garden and used as a show piece for friends and family.

Since then the orangery has evolved and is now used as an alternative extension attached to the property instead of a separate building in the garden. It is now very rarely used to grow orange trees in.

Orangery as an extension
An orangery is classified as an extension with glazed elements usually doors and a roof light. Using roof lights and folding sliding doors is an ideal way to open out an existing room in the house and create that orangery effect.

Orangeries by Apropos are all designed to suit each individual client and property. The orangeries can be tailored with different size and shape roof lights and different style doors to make it bespoke to you.

Apropos can design your orangery as an individual building to suit a period house, or as a modern extension on a modern house. All orangery features by Apropos are built using aluminium and glass to the highest specification. Apropos can design and build you an orangery that will add value to your home and make you want to show it off to your friends and family as they did in the 18th and 19th century.

Alternative orangery features
To create a bespoke orangery Apropos offer features such as different glazing options including tinted, self cleaning and Priva-lite a glass which enables you to choose between frosted and clear glass with the flick of a switch.

Apropos also offer a large range of door and window options to suit you orangery. Their latest set of folding sliding doors, which were launched in April 2010 are slimline making them lighter, more aesthetically pleasing and enabling them to have more glass in them. Folding sliding doors allow your orangery to be opened out onto the garden to enjoy the summer air.
