Designing and Planning an Outdoor Room

Designing and Planning an Outdoor Room

Everyone would love an outdoor room to relax after a hard days work. Sometimes staying indoors can add to one’s stress and an outdoor setting may be the best solution to a truly relaxed atmosphere. You need very careful planning to create a functional and relaxing room for outdoor living. You will need to consider challenges such as privacy concerns and creating shelter from the wind and sun during all seasons.

There are many things to consider before you even contemplate building your outdoor room. Costs of building and running the room are self explanatory whilst other factors become apparent depending on where you are located. Some important points to consider include:

Determine the size and layout of your outdoor space.

You are going to be limited by the size of your property when designing your outdoor room. Of course the larger the space you have, the more choice you have as to the size of your outdoor room. In some towns, it is also important to seek approval of the local council before you build any extra structures at your property.

You also need to consider natural elements such as winds and sun orientation. This can be very useful especially when it comes to energy consumption during the colder months when you might need to heat up your outdoor room.

Other than the size of your space, you also have to consider the activity that will go on in the outdoor room. The more activities you plan to have in your room, the more space you will need. You also need to create zones to separate various activities such as cooking, relaxation and conversation. You should ensure that the room has adequate design for traffic flow.

Complement your Home's Architectural Style

Nothing is more unpleasant to the eye than an outdoor room that is designed with no consideration to the main home or sometimes even the neighbourhood. It is good to choose patterns and colours for the outdoor room that are in harmony with your home and landscape. You do not want to be the neighbour with a pink outdoor room in a neighbourhood of grey colours.

Plan for Privacy and Convenience

Most outdoor rooms do not have walls. If you really value your privacy, then you should consider installing a screening wall. This can be created from precast concrete or even natural plants between you and your neighbours. This is not only good for you but also for your neighbours who might have better things to do than look at you as you sit in your room.

Even if privacy is a main concern for you, convenience is also important. You need your outdoor room to be easily accessible from the house. It is always a good idea to have food preparation areas located near your indoor kitchen to reduce such trips. Access to power and water is also a major design consideration.

Use Professionals and Budget Accordingly

Most of us are on a tight budget. You can consider building your outdoor room in stages as you consult with your landscape architect and other contractors. The beauty of an outdoor room is that you can always add improvements as you can afford them. Get a qualified professional to work with you and you should have an outdoor room that matches your budget as well as aesthetic and functional requirements.
