Conservatory owners could grow their own food
Brits who have invested in a bespoke conservatory or glazed kitchen extension are often keen to create their perfect garden to give them a favourable view.
Many have taken to growing their own fruit and vegetables in one section of their green space in recent years and it has been claimed that the reason for this is the good feelings it gives gardeners, rather than the savings on the supermarket bill.
Speaking at the Glee 2010 event in Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre, Garden Works spokesman Kevin Waters suggested that the feeling of achievement makes Brits keen to grow their own food.
"It is managing to put potatoes on the Sunday dinner plate that you have grown yourself. It is that experience that people are buying," the expert explained.
He noted that there has been a real trend developing in the past two or three years that is only being picked up on by garden centres now.
"The early adopters and people who really saw the trend very early on - maybe four years ago - are starting to see now that sales are not dropping, but the percentage increases are not quite as great as they have been," Mr Waters said, suggesting that the number of grow-your-own enthusiasts may be levelling off.
Conservatory owners who would rather look out onto a garden full of flowers could get advice from the Royal Horticultural Society website.
