Save cash with DIY insulation
While large projects such as bespoke conservatories or pool houses should be left to experts, many home improvements can be carried out by the homeowners themselves.
According to the National Self Build & Renovation Centre in Swindon, one such DIY task can be improving the insulation on a property.
Managing director Tim Doherty explained that Brits can cheaply and easily make their houses more energy efficient by improving the way they retain heat.
"Not only can you save money on labour by laying your own insulation, but you can also save money on your fuel bills in the long term," he said.
The expert added that loft insulation is a good starting point and laying it yourself can save in the region of £300.
"It's not the nicest of jobs, but it is worth it," Mr Doherty noted.
Meanwhile, Oxford University recently published a study questioning the effectiveness of smart meters as a means of saving electricity.
