DIY stores 'should teach young Brits skills'
The August bank holiday is traditionally a time for either getting away or carrying out some much-needed home improvements.
However, the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) is concerned about the lack of DIY skills in the young adults of today.
It has called on leading retailers to hold evening classes to help educate Brits about safe and efficient ways to maintain and develop their properties.
While large improvements such as glazed kitchen extensions and bespoke conservatories may be best left to the experts, some tasks can be performed by anyone with a little initiative.
NHIC research found that 63 per cent of under-35s admitted to being incapable of putting up wallpaper, while 45 per cent said they could not erect a set of shelves.
Director Andrew Leech said that such figures were symptomatic of the modern world and that skills are "obviously not being passed down from father to son" in the way they once were.
"B&Q and Homebase and organisations like that perhaps ought to be holding evening classes for young householders so they can learn ways of improving their house without having to call in the experts," he said.
