Be aware of home insurance clauses, Brits told
While homeowners who have invested in a bespoke conservatory or pool house may be aware of the need to inform their insurance company of the change, there are other things to bear in mind too, it has been claimed.
According to the British Insurance Brokers' Association, policies often have a number of clauses of which people should be aware.
Technical and corporate affairs executive Graeme Trudgill explained that the 'occupancy clause' is one such term and stipulates that homes cannot be unattended for more than a certain amount of time.
"Lots of people do not get advice; they just go online, find the cheapest thing and click 'buy'," he said.
"What they really need to do is to speak to their insurance provider who will provide them with the necessary information so that they are aware of this kind of thing."
Mr Trudgill noted that the length of time attached to the occupancy clause differs from provider to provider, with some allowing up to a year, while others give customers just 30 days.
New research from moneysupermarket.com showed that many Brits are unaware of the home occupancy clauses that apply to them.
Those speaking to their insurance provider about their new pool house or conservatory may also wish to take the opportunity to find out about any clauses which may be part of their deal.
