How conservatory owners can attract birds to their garden
Bespoke conservatory owners who wish to attract wild birds to their garden have been given some advice from an expert.
Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) wildlife advisor Kirsi Peck explained that providing the correct type of environment is essential for keeping the feathered creatures around for the long term.
She recommended planting spiky bushes that are less cat-friendly and provide places for birds to build safe nests.
"You don't need to pigeonhole 'wildlife gardening' in any way, but it could be something that you consciously do, like using as little chemicals as possible to allow the insects to feed for the birds," the expert said.
Ms Peck added that providing plants that produce berries or attract insects is also beneficial for birds.
Her comments follow a British Trust for Ornithology report, which claims that the number of greenfinches and chaffinches in UK gardens is falling.
However, the expert noted that it is difficult to know this for sure as populations can often shift to the fields where crops are being harvested and food is plentiful.
