Homeowners encouraged to take green steps
Homeowners planning to build a bespoke conservatory or garden studio might also like to boost their property's energy efficiency during the revamp.
According to Sustain, there are a number of "quick wins" which allow Brits to cut their carbon footprint and reduce bills.
The body suggested that insulating a property is a cheap and quick solution to energy wastage that can also be helped by behavioural changes from residents.
According to sustainability and communications director Gordon Miller, taking steps like only boiling the required amount of water can be effective in cutting bills and energy outlay.
"When you step up to the bigger stuff like insulation and so on, it does cost a bit more, but it is not a huge amount of money," he said.
Mr Miller explained insulating a home costs just a few hundred pounds, which can be recouped in a year or two's worth of savings.
In other news, the Energy Technologies Institute has revealed that it has begun a new £3 million project to design a supply chain that will help ensure that the vast majority of the homes in use by 2050 are energy efficient.
