New EU legislation 'a burden on homeowners'
Brits planning to invest in a bespoke conservatory or pool house may be interested to hear that new European Union legislation could mean that they have to show how energy efficient their home is when it comes to the time to sell.
Currently, homeowners must commission an energy performance certificate when putting their property on the market, but deals can be concluded before buyers are able to check the document.
However, the proposed new rules will see sellers being forced to provide the details prior to a purchase and are due to be implemented in 2012.
While the regulations may encourage property owners to choose a reputable firm to build their bespoke conservatory or pool house to the highest standards, Sustain claimed that they are just another "burden".
Sustainability and communications director Gordon Miller explained that Brits could see it as another case of "being dictated to".
"All it does is measure what they are doing and I think it just gives the impression that it is yet more legislation being foisted on them," he said.
