Take care with DIY, Brits warned
Property owners have been advised to take care when undertaking any home improvement projects.
Building a bespoke conservatory or pool house is often best left to the experts, but even smaller jobs can go wrong, with disastrous consequences, the National Home Improvement Show warned.
Spokesman Michael Holmes claimed that the number of injuries sustained from poorly carried out DIY is set to rise as a result of Brits trying to save cash as they look to recover from the recession.
A large proportion of the accidents that occur are through the misuse of power tools, while many DIYers are "often over ambitious and overestimate their level of skill".
"Poorly executed DIY can have more than an effect on a homeowner's health and reduce the value of a property as much as five per cent," the expert warned.
Inexperienced homeowners should thoroughly research the project they wish to undertake and start small, Mr Holmes added.
Meanwhile, a man in Greater Manchester was recently hospitalised with serious burns after a home improvement went wrong.
