Government plans to increase tax 'not ideal'
New government plans to encourage homeowners to invest in green improvements to their property could backfire, it has been suggested.
The proposals would see a tax put on poorly-insulated homes, with the idea of making people invest in better insulation.
However, newhomesforsale.co.uk explained that the idea of charging stamp duty tax to owners of homes with low energy efficiency could see more buyers opt for newer, greener properties.
Founder Vernon Pethard claimed that the proposals suggested by the Green Investment Bank Commission were "more stick than carrot" and could force the hand of some Brits.
"These measures may result in more people choosing new [homes] because in addition to being greener, new homes are more economical to own," he said.
Mr Pethard added that an increase in tax may put people off buying older houses, which could cause problems in the property market.
Those who prefer period buildings can mix modern, eco-friendly improvements with classic architecture by investing in a bespoke conservatory or pool house.
