Warm weather causes north-west hosepipe ban
Bespoke conservatory owners and those with pool houses may be rejoicing at the warm, dry weather the UK has experienced this year.
However, avid gardeners in the north-west are likely to be less happy after being hit with the first hosepipe ban in the region for 14 years.
Figures from a 2001 Environmental Agency study show that the proportion of domestic water used in the UK for gardening jumps from an average of six per cent to around 70 per cent during the warmer months.
However, water experts have taken action in the north-west, where stocks have run low.
To help combat the problem for growers, Amateur Gardening magazine editor Kris Collins has suggested they buy some special products from their local nursery.
"If you have any pots or hanging baskets or containers, you can buy water retaining crystals or gels," he explained.
"They are in powder form when you buy them and you put them in the compost."
Mr Collins added that lavender is a great drought-resistant plant and a personal favourite.
