Be aware of asbestos, DIYers told
Home improvers may be best to call in the experts to help keep themselves and their family safe.
According to TV DIY star Craig Philips, homeowners carrying out work on their property should beware of the risks associated with asbestos.
Almost two-thirds (65 per cent) of Brits are not confident of identifying asbestos in their own homes, according to statistics from the British Lung Foundation.
"One person is dying every five hours in the UK of mesothelioma, which is a disease caused directly by asbestos," Big Brother winner Philips said.
He was backed up by British Lung Foundation chief executive Dame Helena Shovelton, who suggested that people have their homes professionally checked before they pull out the toolbox.
She encouraged Brits to be more aware of asbestos, to look into the facts behind it and take steps to avoid exposure.
According to the British Lung Foundation research, less than one in three (29 per cent) Brits would check their homes for asbestos before carrying out DIY.
