Britain enjoys driest year in decades
Brits who have invested in a garden studio or a bespoke lean-to conservatory are likely to be reaping the benefits this summer.
According to the Met Office, the UK has had its driest start to a year since the late 1920s, with an average rainfall of just 356.8mm between January and the end of June.
The statistics show that it is the driest first six months of a year since 1929, when 275.7mm fell.
It is also the second driest period that Britain has experienced for 100 years, with the Met Office claiming that the phenomenon has been caused by a lack of Atlantic weather systems.
Water UK communications director Barrie Clarke explained that the figures show why reservoir levels in the west are so low.
"During such a dry spell it makes sense to use water wisely wherever you live," he said.
Rain is expected in the north and west of the country over the coming weekend, which should go some way to restocking supplies.
Meanwhile, the Royal Horticultural Society recently warned that the dry weather could have a detrimental effect on new trees and plants.
