Protect your garden studio while on holiday
Thousands of Brits are likely to head off on holiday this summer, but one home insurance firm has reminded vacationers to protect their property while they are gone.
According to Aviva, outdoor buildings such as garden studios and sheds are particularly at risk while your house is vacant.
It revealed that claims for break-ins to such structures steadily increase from March until their peak in July and August, when the frequency is almost 60 per cent higher than in January.
Underwriter Jonathan Cracknell explained that while most homeowners take steps to protect their main building during periods of absence, many forget about their gardens, which can contain all types of swag for burglars.
"Of course the key with any security while you are on holiday is not to advertise that your home is empty, so don't leave wheelie bins out, leave a car in the drive if you can and have some lights on timers to come on in the evenings and early mornings," he suggested.
Mr Cracknell added that homeowners should also have a neighbour check in now and then to ensure that there are no leaks - a common problem during summer.
Meanwhile, Moneyfacts recently revealed that mortgage rates are at a seven-year low, which could leave homeowners with some spare cash for improvements.
