Clarkson most popular house sitter
Brits who have just invested thousands of pounds in a new bespoke conservatory or other home improvement may be forgiven for being overprotective of their home.
However, new research has shown that a large proportion of UK citizens would leave their property in the hands of a man who has a reputation for smashing up homes - albeit mobile homes.
Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson may be no stranger to destroying caravans, but more than a quarter (28 per cent) of respondents to a recent moneysupermarket.com poll said they would trust him to housesit for them.
He finished top of the list of celebrities who Brits felt were responsible enough to look after their abode.
Others included The One Show presenter Christine Bleakley, who had 23.9 per cent of the vote, and Cheryl Cole, to whom 14.2 per cent were in favour of handing their keys.
Just 6.3 per cent would trust Lord Alan Sugar, while 3.7 per cent were in favour of England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.
Moneysupermarket.com editor Clare Francis admitted her surprise at Clarkson's victory.
"I have a sneaky suspicion that many of us may be keener to see the car that he turns up in, rather than thinking about his ability to look after the house," she said.
Meanwhile, those who have invested in a new conservatory may consider adding flooring from Kahrs, which was recently voted best wood floor at the 2010 CFJ/CFA Flooring Industry Awards.
