First-time buyers now going it alone
The majority of people buying their first home are single, rather than part of a couple, for the first time since records began.
Such news may be of interest to those who have invested in a bespoke lean-to conservatory or other home improvement in the hope of making their property more attractive to buyers.
According to the Santander Mortgages figures, 37 per cent of first-time buyers since 2006 have been single, with 29 per cent having purchased with a spouse.
This is down from 84 per cent in the 1970s, 57 per cent in the 1980s and 46 per cent in the 1990s.
FirstrungNow.com managing director Helen Adams believes that more first-time buyers are now getting help from their parents.
"I think that there was a time when people realised that to get on the property ladder they needed to buy with someone else - their brother, partner or friend - but since that time it has become clear that parents invariably need to get involved," she said.
