Manchester council calls for more investment in home improvements
Calls are intensifying for more to be done to encourage homeowners to invest in home improvements that will cut their energy bills and help the environment.
Manchester City Council was the latest organisation to throw its weight behind the growing number of bodies hoping that Brits will embrace green technology.
It said that while finding the necessary investment to make the UK more sustainable will be a challenge, such steps "must be taken".
Executive member for the environment Nigel Murphy explained that while all new homes are to be at least carbon neutral by 2020, the majority of properties will still be ones which already exist.
He suggested that more must be done to encourage owners to retrofit their houses with green technology.
"The start we have made in supporting homeowners and landlords to implement energy saving measures to reduce their fuel bills and carbon emissions is going to have to move to a whole new scale," he said at the opening of the Greenbuild Expo 2010.
His comments follow calls from Geothermal International for the government to step up its efforts in providing assistance for homeowners who wish to add green improvements.
