Homes 'need to be insured'
Homeowners who have invested in a new bespoke lean-to conservatory or other improvement should inform their insurance provider to ensure they are still covered.
A new report showed that households without insurance face a total annual bill of around £200 million for items lost during burglaries.
The Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks figures show that around 150,000 uninsured properties are burgled each year, with the average loss standing at £1,200.
Every homeowner should ensure they are covered against burglaries, floods and other unforeseen circumstances, according to the Association of British Insurers.
Media relations manager Malcolm Tarling explained that it can take years to replace lost items that are not insured.
As homes are the biggest single investment that many people will make in their lives, it is important to protect them, he added.
"Also, anyone who lends money is unlikely to lend money on the basis you haven't got some kind of insurance to protect your investment if things go wrong," the expert noted.
