Housing minister 'a bonus to industry'
Having a housing minister with as much previous experience of the industry as the newly appointed Grant Shapps is a big bonus, it has been claimed.
According to the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), having Mr Shapps in charge should be seen as a good thing as he already knows the business.
Some had suggested that the fact that the new housing minister has not been granted a place in the cabinet might be a blow, but FMB director general Richard Diment explained that people should look at the positives.
"It is really brilliant that we have got somebody with the housing responsibility who has actually dealt with that brief for four of five years. You have got somebody who, unlike some of his predecessors, really has got into the job," he said.
However, the expert added that some of his colleagues in the building and home improvement sector remain frustrated at the lack of a single government role that deals with all aspects concerning the industry.
He explained that a dedicated minister who is responsible for housing, construction, planning and all other related issues would be a major step forward.
