Whether it is a pool house or bespoke conservatory, kitchen extension or roof light, the repercussions of having an unscrupulous firm install it can be very costly.
According to problemsolved.co.uk, more than three million Brits are ripped off by cowboy builders each year and the majority of these could be avoided.
It suggested homeowners pay careful attention to paperwork as it can be a big giveaway.
Things to look for include missing business addresses, only having a mobile phone number and a lack of details on quotations.
If the deposit requested is more than around 25 per cent of the total cost then this could be cause for alarm too.
Builders who demand cash payment should also be regarded with suspicion, the website suggested.
