Make sure tradesmen have insurance
Homeowners planning on having a bespoke conservatory, pool house, kitchen extension or some other large home improvement project carried out by tradesmen should take precautions, it has been suggested.
According to Sainsbury's Finance, it would be prudent to ensure that the firm has adequate insurance to cover any damage that might occur.
It revealed that tradesmen cause in the region of £590 million of damage to property every year, £118 million of which may be caused by those without insurance.
To compound the problem, those who allow uninsured workers to carry out improvements may even be invalidating their own cover.
While 25 million adults have employed a tradesman over the past five years, just 16 per cent of these asked for evidence that they were insured to carry out the work.
"Some home insurers, like ourselves, will review matters of damage on a case by case basis and may cover damage done to a property by a qualified tradesperson. However some insurers may not," explained Sainsbury's Home Insurance manager Ben Tyte.
In other news, moneysupermarket.com recently advised Brits to make sure their garden contents were covered ahead of the summer.
