The case against using cowboy conservatory builders
An article in a Scottish newspaper has shown how some homeowners take a big risk when entrusting their property to cowboy builders in the hope of saving cash.
The Rutherglen Reformer revealed how a Cambuslang resident has lost £6,000 after paying for a conservatory that was never finished.
Liz Stewart and her partner Darren Gray gave the money to James O'Raw - a representative of Canterbury Conservatories - who told them he would build them a glazed extension on the side for £8,400, as opposed to the £14,000 he had quoted them through the firm he worked for.
However, Mr O'Raw failed to pay the builders he had commissioned to carry out the work, leaving the homeowners with a mess of a back garden for weeks last year.
Since then, the company has gone bust and Mr O'Raw has disconnected his phone, leaving Ms Stewart £6,000 out of pocket.
The misery was compounded by the fact that the cash she used for the home improvement had been left to her by her mother, who died last January.
In other news, a Scottish family has been given an award for their eco-friendly house, which features a device that pumps heat from the conservatory around the home, the Energy Saving Trust revealed.
