Conservatory owners given award
A Scottish family who installed a system that takes heat from their conservatory and pumps it around the home has won an environmental award.
According to the Energy Saving Trust, the McDermid family from West Calder have taken advantage of the fact that their south-facing lean-to glazed extension benefits from extended hours of sunlight to heat their home in an eco-friendly manner.
They were given the National Sustainability Award in recognition of their efforts to reduce their environmental impact.
Among the improvements made are the use of energy efficient light bulbs, the installation of a wood burning stove and the foundation of a vegetable plot.
Judith McDermid told the West Lothian Courier that the family were "absolutely delighted" at the recognition.
"We weren't expecting to be chosen as the Family Award winner as all of the projects were so inspiring, but we're happy the voters chose to support our project as it's a tribute to our hard work and commitment," she said.
Meanwhile, the Rutherglen Reformer has told of how a Cambslang resident was ripped off by a cowboy builder who promised to build her a conservatory at a discounted rate.
