Home improvements 'should be for your own benefit'
Brits have been advised to improve their homes for their own benefit and no one else's.
According to Location, Location, Location presenter Phil Spencer, it is better to upgrade your home and live in it, rather than investing in it just before you sell.
In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, the expert said that homeowners should make their residences as perfect as they can as soon as possible.
"You might as well do the work straightaway if you can and get the benefit out of it yourself," he said, before giving a number of tips on how to go about transforming a property.
The Adding Value to Your Home author said that home improvements, such as a bespoke conservatory, should be for the benefit of the owner and not just about making a "fast buck" by selling up straight after.
Aside from the turbulent housing market, Brits who try to improve their property ahead of a sale run the risk of adding something that potential buyers may not actually care for.
Mr Spencer said that those needing more space will find it cheaper to extend than to move to a larger home.
He noted that kitchen extensions, extra bedrooms, home offices and other space-adding projects are all popular alternatives to buying a new abode.
In other news, the Plymouth Herald recently noted that a number of home improvements had transformed a local house that has now gone on the market for almost £230,000.
