Author's conservatory view set to be spoiled by flats
The view from a conservatory used by a renowned 19th century author could soon be spoiled by a new development, it has been suggested.
George Eliot, who wrote The Mill On The Floss from the glazed extension to his Putney home, loved the vista she enjoyed while penning the book, the Wandsworth Guardian reported.
However, a block of flats could soon disturb the view from her Wimbledon Park Road residence, which stretches the 40 miles between Crystal Palace and Wimbledon Hill.
Current owner Sarah Roberts told the newspaper that the famous author used to sit in the conservatory at the rear of the house or use a table at the bay window to enjoy the "wide horizon" while she wrote.
Ms Roberts speculated that the scene from the glazed extension may even have influenced the writing in Eliot's famous semi-autobiographical novel.
Meanwhile, comedian Paul Merton is hoping to sell his London home, which features a conservatory, cinema, games room and revolving summerhouse, for £925,000, according to the Evening Standard.
