Homeowners could be paid for reducing energy expenditure

06 April 2010

Brits planning to invest in a bespoke conservatory or other form of glazed extension may wish to ensure it is as eco-friendly as possible.

A new government initiative is set to reward those who improve the energy efficiency of their homes.

The Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC EES) and Feed In Tariffs (FIT) are aimed at encouraging homeowners and businesses to invest in technology that will reduce their impact on the environment.

The Renewable Energy Centre has praised the projects, suggesting that they are some of the "most positive initiatives which the government has implemented".

Under the CRC EES and FIT plans, the revenue raised from selling emissions allowances will be filtered back to the homes and businesses that have cut their carbon footprint as an incentive to continue their operations.

However, a Renewable Energy Centre spokesperson expressed concern that only the largest corporate firms would be able to afford the initial outlay required for them to see returns on their investments.
