Conservatory planning deferrals 'frustrating'
A conservatory extension is at the centre of a long-running dispute over planning permission in Thurrock.
The local authority for the town in the south-east has deferred decisions on a number of projects numerous times and the owners are becoming increasingly frustrated, according to the Thurrock Gazette.
Words such as "laughing stock" and "farce" have been used to describe the course of events, which has seen a decision on Manor House's loft conversion, conservatory and two-storey extension delayed four times since January.
The newspaper revealed that the owners are now considering taking legal action after the council changed its mind at the start of the year, delaying the progress of the planned work.
A number of councillors are reportedly becoming irritated with the planning committee's failure to decide on the issue."
"We can't and must not continually defer items, we are opening up this authority to quite substantial legal costs," councillor Gerard Rice said, according to the newspaper.
The situation illustrates the frustrations that some homeowners can have when obtaining planning permission for their bespoke conservatories and other home improvement projects.
Meanwhile, recent figures from Halifax Home Insurance show that 40 per cent of Brits would rather call in experts rather than attempt DIY.
