Britons' DIY incompetency
A large proportion of Brits are too incompetent to perform simple home improvement tasks, it has been claimed.
According to Halifax Home Insurance, two-thirds of the UK population do not have the spatial awareness to undertake DIY projects.
The organisation estimated that around £400 million worth of damage was caused last year by mistakes made by such people.
This perhaps illustrates why some prefer to opt for professionals when undertaking home improvements such as the installation of bespoke conservatories or kitchen extensions.
However, a lack of education could be part of the problem, with almost a quarter (23 per cent) of respondents claiming they have never learned to change a fuse and 45 per cent unable to erect a shelf.
Furthermore, ten per cent cannot change a light bulb, while 40 per cent would prefer to rely on tradesmen rather than trying their hand at DIY.
In other news, recent research from Mintel found that two million Brits have quit DIY in the past two years, with over-35s most likely to down their tools.
