Worrying research into tool hire
Brits considering embarking on a major home improvement project without help may be concerned by recent research from Which?
The report into DIY equipment rentals showed a worrying proportion of hire tools are in poor and even dangerous condition.
According to the study, almost half of all gear available failed safety tests, with common problems including damaged wires, unearthed plugs and worn or broken blades.
Such was the seriousness of the results that many of the problem products have been removed from firms' shelves.
According to Build It magazine editor Duncan Hayes, there could be "quite serious implications" for the industry.
He advised firms to "up their game" and check all tools before hiring them out.
"It is imperative to ask whether the tools have been regularly inspected and whether the blades are sharp and then do a manual inspection yourself," Mr Hayes said.
The expert added that the recession may have boosted the number of home improvement projects in the UK.
