Home improvement driven by the wallet, not the eco-conscience, study finds
A desire to cut back on their bills rather than their carbon emissions is the biggest reason why most British homeowners invest in double-glazing for their bespoke conservatories, the findings of a new study suggest.
According to new research carried out by the consultancy firm Vanson Bourne, just 16 per cent of the UK consumers polled stated that a desire to help the environment was the driving force behind their efforts to cut back on their carbon emissions.
In comparison, 60 per cent cited a wish to reduce their energy bills as the principal reason for their investing in a range of energy-saving techniques, from fitting more efficient light bulbs to installing double-glazing.
Commenting on the findings, Alan J Tadd, managing director of Energenie, which commissioned the research, noted that there is still a long way to go before Britons are willing to go that extra mile for the environment.
"What this proves is that for people to do something, it has to be simple and easy," he said.
In February, a report from Build It Magazine revealed that the cost of green home improvements is deterring many Britons from reducing their carbon footprints.
