Historic conservatory boosted by football club's community development
One of the north of England's best-loved conservatories is to benefit from a major urban regeneration scheme, it has been announced.
While recent plans for Liverpool Football Club to move from its current home of Anfield to a new stadium failed to get off the ground, a new report in the city's Echo newspaper has revealed that the surrounding area has nevertheless benefitted from significant levels of investment over recent months.
In particular, a number of unsuitable homes in the Stanley Park area have been demolished or refurbished in preparation for the anticipated new ground, while the iconic Isla Gladstone Conservatory in the park itself has benefitted from funding.
Andrea Titterington, Liverpool FC's regeneration director, explained to the newspaper: "No public funding has been received by LFC, but our match funding of more than £6 million has enabled the council to receive £9.2 million [in] European funding for projects including the Isla Gladstone conservatory in Stanley Park, as well as highways and infrastructure improvements."
Built in 1870 as a place to house tropical and exotic plants, the conservatory now serves as a gallery and as an events venue, allowing people to get married under historic glazing, for example.
