Conservatory restoration at Huddersfield park 'progressing well'

05 February 2010

A major restoration project at a park in Huddersfield is finally nearing its completion, it was confirmed yesterday (February 4th).

The attempts to renovate Greenhead Park have been criticised by locals, who have complained of slow progress and damage to its grasslands, the Huddersfield Daily Examiner reports.

However, organisers of the £5.4 million initiative now say that work on restoring the park's iconic conservatory, Italianate fountain and lake should be finished by October.

"Work on restoring the main conservatory building is now well underway, with the framework of the new restaurant being built next to it now in place," noted the newspaper.

John Fletcher, assistant head of Kirklees Council's Culture and Leisure Services for parks, also revealed that the project is currently at "full steam ahead" after being delayed by the recent freezing weather.

Greenland Park, which was first opened in 1884, has traditionally welcomed about 250,000 visitors per year, but this figure is expected to rise sharply when the restoration is complete.
