NIAB opens major new glasshouse

03 February 2010

The National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB) has opened a new glasshouse facility in Cambridge, it has been confirmed.

Located at Park Farm near Histon, the purpose-built conservatory incorporates the most up-to-date greenhouse technology and biomass heating.

The new complex is designed to help the NIAB modernise the venue's ability to provide the necessary environment for plant science, variety evaluation and seed testing.

James Paice, shadow farming minister and MP for south-east Cambridgeshire, was invited to open the facility and explained that such glasshouses are vital to the future of the UK agriculture industry.

"NIAB is renowned internationally for its expertise in seed and variety testing, and this impressive new glasshouse facility will help strengthen the institute's core activities in those areas," he told the news provider.

"I'm also delighted that NIAB is extending its research capabilities to strengthen the link between the genetic improvement of crops and their delivery into practical agriculture."

The NIAB is a not-for-profit organisation which boasts over 80 years' experience in the agricultural and food sectors.
