Brits advised to avoid travelling workers

15 May 2009

Brits considering building a conservatory or pool house should be wary of travelling tradesmen who sell their services door-to-door.

The warning came from Trading Standards officers with the Highland council and it advised homeowners to take care when choosing which builder carries out any work on their property.

Spokesperson John Laing said people should "think twice before employing someone they don't know, or without getting several quotes and clear details of exactly what work is to be done".

He explained the body receives regular complaints from people who have experienced poor workmanship, aggressive behaviour and inflated prices from itinerant traders.

Mr Laing added those who choose to employ these workers should report any problems with standards or payments to the authority.

The advice to avoid travelling workers has also been echoed by government-endorsed TrustMark, which urges people not to be forced into making decisions about home improvements on the spot.
