Three generations squeezed into half a million homes

17 April 2009

More than half a million British households are squeezing in at least three generations of the same family, according to new figures.

The statistics, from Lloyds TSB, show a 7.6 per cent rise since 2005 - which could see some need to add an extension or loft conversion to make room for extra relatives.

A growing number of Brits are supporting both their children and their parents, according to the results.

With the number expected to rise by more than 56,000 in the next ten years, spokesperson Phil Lonely explained the trend could be a result of the financial downturn.

"This reports shows that more and more middle-aged people are taking on the care of older family members and supporting children who are going through tough times," he said.

Some of the most common places to find such conditions include Bradford, Brent, Luton and Merthyr Tydfil.

The news come just days after a Santander Group study showed there are around 1.9 million people aged 18 to 54 living with their parents in the UK.
