Eco-dome design suggested for Battersea

20 June 2008

A design suggestion for the redevelopment of the derelict Battersea Power Station involves an eco-dome which also features a glazed chimney.

Online resource Property Week explains that the glazed canopy will cover five office blocks with a dome not unlike that of the Eden Project in Cornwall.

The glass chimney will extend to 300 metres high and the entire structure has already been nicknamed "the Spark Plug".

Sustainability and deliverability have been identified as the key goals of the proposed build, which is also due to incorporate 8 million sq ft of offices, shops, flats, leisure facilities and hotels.

It is noted that the eco-dome will be covered in ethylene tetrafluoroethylene - known more commonly as ETFE - which is a polymer that has been used at the Eden Project, Allianz Arena in Munich and Heathrow's Terminal 5.

The Times recently featured an excerpt from the Rough Guide to Accessible Britain which listed the Eden Project as one of the UK's top days out for people with disabilities.
