Conservatories 'are the first choice'

For homeowners looking to add a little extra living space to their properties, conservatories remain the most popular option, it has been claimed.

Conservatories are "still the first choice" when attempting to "really open up your living space", reports the Shropshire Star.

The publication advises homeowners to be aware of whether they are likely to need planning permission when hoping to install a conservatory.

Should the floor space represent an increase of 15 per cent or more over the existing property, it is likely that permission must be sought, according to the article.

Meanwhile, if the conservatory is greater than half the total size of the garden into which it is being installed, the Shropshire Star adds that planning approval should also be applied for.

The publication refers to guidance from the government's online resource the Planning Portal on which circumstances are likely to necessitate such an application.

Other determining factors listed by the website include whether the conservatory roof is higher than that of the house and the height of the conservatory at any point close to the boundary of the property.
