"Crystal" conservatory serves artistic purpose

A "crystal" conservatory serves to "magnify the moment" and forms part of a $21 million (£10.48 million) expansion of the Florida Museum of Fine Arts.

The Tampa Tribune explains that the new addition comprises a "soaring" conservatory with a 30-foot-high glazed roof and large windows to provide views over the water.

Described as "cathedral-like", the edifice provides a lot more room for works of art, museum director John Scholder tells the publication.

"Only ten per cent of our collection can be on view at any one time. It also gives us more space for people," he adds.

The conservatory features shell-encrusted concrete walls, marble floors and enjoys a great deal of natural light.

Meanwhile, the Daily Telegraph recently suggested that a bespoke conservatory or other glass-fronted extension can provide a means for people to enjoy the exterior world and the changing of the seasons from the comfort of their living space.
