Innovative colour palette 'creates space'

In order to make a smaller space feel larger and brighter a 1970s aficionado has gone to great lengths, it has been asserted.

John McClachlan tells the Guardian that in order to make the most of his tiny basement flat he created a streamlined look in his entrance hallway by clearing away as much clutter as possible.

In order to create a feeling of space throughout the property he used a similar (and equally 1970s) palette of olive green, cream and dark brown, with splashes of vivid orange.

The colour experiments took place after Mr McClachlan failed to create a sense of space by painting small, dark spaces white and being unable to invest in sky lights or glass sliding doors.

"It didn't work. I just ended up with a small, white room that felt too dark," he tells the publication.

Meanwhile, independent estate agent haart recently stated that natural light is a resource that people should use to the greatest extent possible in their properties.
