Sustainable glass design leads to award

The glazing of a university building in north Oxford has contributed to it winning an environmentally-friendly award.

A panel of judges comprised of councillors and officers praised the Ruth Deech Building -which forms part of St Anne's College - for its double-glazing, use of solar energy and low-energy fixtures.

The David Steel Sustainable Building award, which is made from recycled glass, was presented to the bursar of St Anne's college Martin Jackson on Friday, explains the Oxford Mail.

Lord mayor of Oxford John Tanner tells the publication: "The team at St Anne's College has worked extremely hard to make this building environmentally friendly."

Preparations are due to begin for the presentation of next year's David Steel award, which is open to edifices constructed during the 2008-09 financial year.

Last year's winning entry was 34 East Street in Osney Island, Oxford and the award was given to owner and architect of the site David Hammond.
